Overview of the book of Numbers
Dear friends, as we begin our reading on the book of Numbers, it might be good to note the following characteristics and outline of the book:
1. Numbers starts in the wilderness and ends in the wilderness. Hebrew name for this book is actually “In the Wilderness”.
2. The book of Numbers trace Israel’s journey from the foot of Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. What could have taken just two weeks became a 40 year journey.
3. Why did the journey took 40 years? The main issue God had with the first generation of Israelites were their unbelief. Even when Joshua and Caleb came back with encouraging news of the Promised Land, the people prefer to believe in most of the spies, who became afraid at what they saw in Canaan.
4. The book of Numbers is part narrative punctuated with laws. The laws were a big part of Israel’s life as the author wanted readers to remember that the people were called to be holy even as God is holy.
5. The seemingly circular narrative is intentional. It highlights the theme of how Israel was lost in the wilderness. Despite the harsh traveling, they were back to where they were. They were on the brink of entering the Promised Land, but due to a lack of faith in what God can do, they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.
6. Numbers 1-25 is on the story of the first generation of the Israelites. Numbers 26-36 starts the story of the second generation. The first generation is characterized by unbelief which leads to death. The second generation is characterized by faith which leads to life.
7. Notice that census were taken at the start of both generations (Chapters 1 and 26). This signifies the “start” for both generations.
8. Themes you can find in Numbers:
a) Human rebellion against God
b) Divine punishment and God’s faithfulness to His covenant
c) God’s laws in the life of the people
d) God’s divine provision in terms of manna
e) The failure of evil in the face of God’s protection
