Read: 2 Chronicles 9
Verses chosen for meditation: 2 Chronicles 9:5-8
5 And she said to the king, “The report was true that I heard in my own land of your words and of your wisdom, 6 but I did not believe the reports until I came and my own eyes had seen it. And behold, half the greatness of your wisdom was not told me; you surpass the report that I heard. 7 Happy are your wives! Happy are these your servants, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! 8 Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and set you on his throne as king for the Lord your God! Because your God loved Israel and would establish them forever, he has made you king over them, that you may execute justice and righteousness.”
Reflect
2 Chronicles 9 talks about the visit of queen Sheba to the kingdom of Israel. Israel greatly prospered during the reign of Solomon. So much so that a foreign queen from faraway lands made a personal trip to witness the reported greatness.
When the queen arrived and saw all that Solomon showed her, she was said to be "breathless". She was so impressed that she gave glory to the "Lord your God".
The visit of queen Sheba was a shining example of how God's promises to Israel came true. The promises that if Israel would abide by His instructions and commandments; they would prosper to such an extent where the nations around them and even those faraway would come to know. Israel would then get to witness the glory and power of God; and potentially lead them to worship the one true God of the Universe.
Relate
Do we get visits from the queen Sheba (s) of the current era? Or rather, are we asked of our faith from friends, loved ones and even people whom we know for a short time?
Jesus had said in the Gospels that as believers, we are to witness the Gospel for the world to see and know. Such witnesses can come through the sharing and preaching of the Gospel. Most of the time however, our Christian witness will be through the way we lead our lives.
Are we living our lives in such a God glorifying way that people near or far from us, will come and ask why? Why are you living like this? Why are you so different from what the world is teaching us? How can you be so patient with this person when I am already fuming mad? How can you forgive this person who had done you great harm? How can you give when you have barely enough? Why is your work so excellent when you have to take care of so many things at the home front? Why are you usually so joyful and at peace? Who is this God whom you are worshipping? I like to know.
Jesus was very clear. Our Christian witness is not a negotiable. Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine (imperative) before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Rest
Lord, help us to be good witnesses for your glory. Let our light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give all the glory to You. This we pray in Jesus Name. Amen.
