Revelations 22:12-21

Read Revelations 22:12-21 Verses for meditation: Revelations 22:12-13, 16, 20-21 ESV: 12 "Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” 16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” 20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen. Reflect How does it feel to be reading the very last few verses of the bible? What do the proclamations, the last few of them, say about Christ? Come, Lord Jesus! Does this really express our desire? How does the greatest book end, and on what note? But is this really the end? Relate With mixed feelings, I'm writing this last devotion based on the final ten verses of the greatest book, the bible. What a journe...

Galatians 1-2 "Rebuking is love meh?"

Read Galatians 1-2

Verses chosen for reflection:

Galatians 1:6-9

6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.

Reflect

Paul was not mincing his words. In verse 6, he expressed great displeasure by using the greek word "taumazo" (astonished or marvel) against the churches of Galatia, for turning to a "different gospel" so quickly. For Paul, there are no multiple types of gospel.

There is only one Gospel which speaks of the works and redemption of Christ. To suggest and preach any other things in addition to the one Gospel is heretical. Paul had harsh words for the false teachers who were trying to lead the Galatians astray. That those who preach the false gospel will be accursed.

Yes. Paul was surprised that the churches of Galatia had turned deaf ears to his teachings and the conviction of the Spirit so quickly. Where was the discernment? Why did they choose to listen to false teachers who discredited Paul when he was not present? They should know better!

Paul's displeasure was clear and he was not afraid to show it. Paul prioritizes the Gospel over his concerns (if any) over how other people perceives him. Never mind if he became unpopular with some. If the churches in Galatia needed a rebuke, they will have it. To Paul; better to correct what is required of the Gospel than to allow false teachings to corrupt the soul.

Relate

In today's society, Paul would have been advised against speaking so harshly against the churches. He would have been advised to use a "softer" approach than to potentially spoil relationships. "Egos are fragile! Pastors and leaders of the church should know better than to destroy bridges with our words."

While it is true that we should be sensitive and careful with the use of words, I do not see anything wrong with Paul' expression of great displeasure against the churches in Galatia. For I think Paul's intent for doing so was not to fulfil his own ego of having been their Apostle and yet they chose to listen to others.

Rather, Paul's intent was to rebuke them to their senses of how they treated the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ so lightly. Paul discerned that a rebuke at that time would awaken their sleepy soul. He did it, because he was courageous and love them enough to do it. Not because he enjoyed it. Sure, some might have been angry with him for it. But I believe he prayed that they would be able to see what he was trying to do and his love for them.

Paul's love and courage for the churches is inspiring. It provides me with the insight that God had given us the discernment and capacity to love in the way He wants us to (not in the way we want to). What I need to do is to stay close to the Lord in order to hear His voice and make the right decisions. Not just in being able to rebuke when there is a need to; but also to withhold my tongue when there is a need to.

While there is wisdom always in being sensitive and understanding; I should not shun away from expressing displeasure when the situation calls for it. My motivation for doing something (or not doing something) must be pure and aligned with God's will. That should be the priority than anything else. The Gospel is always a priority.

Rest

Lord, help us to put You and the Gospel first. First things first. Give us the wisdom, discernment and patience even as we go about our daily lives. This is so that our Gospel witness draws more to You. In Jesus Name. Amen.

Jason
